Join author Kaya Oakes (Continuing Lecturer in College Writing, UC Berkeley) for a book talk about her recently published The Defiant Middle: How Women Claim Life's In-Betweens to Remake the World, followed by a conversation with Professor Ronit Stahl (Professor of History, Interim Administrative Chair of the Religious Diversity Cluster, UC Berkeley).
In The Defiant Middle, Kaya Oakes explores how transitional eras or living in marginalized female identities can be both spiritually challenging and wonderfully freeing for women who don’t fit in traditional social expectations. She draws on thousands of years of wisdom from women mystics who carved out new ways of being at the margins of the religious traditions and cultures that created these limited ways of being for women.
This free hybrid event will take place in person at 3335 Dwinelle Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Physical attendance will be limited, and the event will also be available online via Zoom.
